Research projects must fulfil the criteria set for scientific research. The outcome of a research project is a scientific report. Research projects apply for grants, which are granted by the Ministry of Education. The Ministry usually funds major projects that last for 2-4 years.
The goal of development projects is to develop equipment, methods or programs that will benefit athletes, coaches or sports in general. Development projects apply for grants, which are granted by TEKES - Technology Development Centre of Finland, Finnish Olympic Committee and Finnish Paralympic Committee. The duration of a development project is 1 - 4 years.
Service projects are carried out at the request of customers. Customers include sports associations, training groups, sports institutes, testing centers and private companies. KIHU attempts to offer services that other institutes (training, testing and sports medicine centers, sports institutes) cannot offer due to the newness, high cost or complexity of methods. The duration of service projects can be from a few weeks to 2 - 4 years.
