History

KIHU - Research Institute for Olympic Sports was founded in the spring of 1990 as an independent unit of the Finnish Foundation for Promotion of Physical Education and Health (LIKES) and is supported by the University of Jyväskylä, Finnish Ministry of Education and Finnish Olympic Committee. KIHU's role is to conduct research in Olympic sports and apply the research results to practical coaching and coaches' education. KIHU's mission is to help secure the future of elite sports in Finland.

Operations at KIHU began on 1 Jan 1991 with the help of a grant from state-sanctioned gambling funds. The grant allowed the hiring of four senior and two junior researchers, three research assistants and four other employees. The number of employees has since increased, thanks to other funding.

At the beginning of 2000, KIHU's operations were moved from the LIKES foundation to the Research and Development Foundation for Olympic Sports (KIHU foundation). The LIKES foundation was then able to concentrate on the operations of its other unit, the Research Centre for Physical Education and Health (LIKES Research Centre). The KIHU foundation was established on 6 October 1999 by the Finnish Olympic Association, University of Jyväskylä, City of Jyväskylä and LIKES foundation. KIHU's mission remained the same as before. Within the new foundation, KIHU will attempt to improve cooperation with the different operators in the field of elite sports.
